Description

Second Skin Audio: Luxury Liner MLV Sheet (1 lb / 2 lb)

Second Skin Luxury Liner mass loaded vinyl is designed to block even the most stubborn airborne sound waves. The PVC vinyl is compounded with inert materials to build mass, and create an easy-to-install wall between you and whatever's creating the noise. Once you see what this MLV can do, Luxury Liner will be your new favorite noise reduction tool. It's tough, so you can use it outside. It's super flexible, so you can bend it around curves. And it's dense, so it BLOCKS NOISE!

Choose between the standard 1 lb per square foot MLV sheet and the extra brawny 2 lb per square foot sheet. All mass loaded vinyl sheets are black and made right here in the USA. This is not a cheap, recycled MLV. It's intentionally crafted to be flexible and pliable, with over 3x the tensile strength of lower quality MLV (600 psi). Luxury Liner MLV is odorless and fire resistant, passing vehicle fire safety testing standards (FMVSS). This beefy noise barrier is just waiting to come dominate unwanted noise in your home, vehicle, or commercial building.

  • 1/8” thick mass loaded vinyl
  • Each sheet is 24” x 54” (9 Sq Ft)
  • Weight: 9 pounds per sheet

  • How does it compare to the 2 lb MLV? It's half as thick, and more flexible. This is the preferred MLV density for automotive, walls, ceilings, PVC pipes, and other curved surfaces.
  • Made in the USA

Home & Commercial Application Instructions

Recommended Install Method: staples, screws, nails, or hung with reinforced grommets

Install Locations: walls, floors, ceilings, soundproof boxes,  generator boxes, sound blocking fence, PVC pipes, HVAC ducts, sound proof door, mechanical rooms, machinery enclosures, office partition walls

Product Usage

  • Luxury Liner sheets are cut to size for small projects. Don't bother with a full MLV roll if you're just soundproofing some pipes or a box. This MLV noise barrier is cut into sheets that are the ideal size if you're trying to figure out how to quiet a generator with a soundproof box or other small soundproofing projects around the house.
  • Cut with a sharp utility knife or a good pair of upholstery scissors. For longer cuts that need to be straight, use a T-square to make the cut.
  • The key to an effective installation is to make your noise barrier airtight. Be precise when cutting the sheets to size. Use foil tape across the seams. Seal your edges with foil tape or acoustical sealant caulk.
  • If installing using adhesive, you must use one designed for vinyl, like HH-66 Vinyl Contact Cement
  • We recommend full MLV rolls for larger applications inside the walls, floors, or ceiling. If you're looking for a full roll, we have several options to buy mass loaded vinyl

Have a Larger Home or Industrial Project? You need MLV Rolls.

Automotive Application Instructions

Recommended Install Adhesive: HH-66 Vinyl Contact Cement or Dual Lock Reclosable Fasteners (spray adhesive will not work on vinyl)

Install Locations: cabin side firewall, car floor, trunk, on top of wheel wells, and back wall

  1. For best results, Luxury Liner should be applied on top of a sound deadener, such as Second Skin Audio's Damplifier Pro or Spectrum. It’ll be the final layer of your multi-layer sound insulation bubble.
  2. Choose your decoupler. For the floor of vehicles, we recommend OverKill Pro (closed cell foam) or Heat Wave Pro (jute material) as a decoupling material between the MLV and the application surface on the car. OverKill Pro adds water resistant insulation, whereas the Heat Wave Pro is an OEM style thermal insulator and sound absorber. Both options work well.
  3. If upholstery or carpet is not already out, remove it. Ensure there’s no loose debris, rust, dirt, or waxy oils.
  4. Cut Luxury Liner to the desired size with a sharp utility knife or a good pair of scissors. Be sure to cut to a size that will allow you to reinstall the carpet and upholstery trim. Do not cover wires, drain holes, or mechanical devices. This part of the project is more art than science, as you need to have as few gaps as possible in your noise barrier while avoiding interference with other parts of the car.
  5. Use vinyl cement, such as HH-66 Vinyl Contact Cement, to adhere the Luxury Liner to the decoupler of choice. Apply one coat on the Luxury Liner Vinyl and one to the decoupling product.
  6. Apply a second adhesive to the decoupler and the foil side of your Damplifier Pro. You can reuse the contact cement again or another one you choose. The decoupling layer should be attached to the foil side of your sound deadener. Apply constant pressure over the entire surface for several minutes to ensure a solid bond.
  7. Seal any exposed edges or seams with Foil Insulation Tape. The goal is to create as close to an unbroken noise barrier as possible.
  8. Factory carpet can be replaced immediately. Aftermarket carpet kits can be attached directly to the exposed mass loaded vinyl side of Luxury Liner.
